Benefits of Gas Heaters
Energy Efficiency
Gas heaters are typically more energy-efficient than electric heaters.
Cost-Effective
Natural gas and Propane is often cheaper than electricity, especially in regions where gas is readily available.
Quick Heating
Gas heaters warm up spaces more quickly due to the high heat output of combustion.
Types of Gas Heaters
Gas heaters come in various types, each suited to different spaces and needs. Here are the main categories:
Central Gas Heating Systems
Integrated into a home’s ductwork, these systems heat entire homes and are typically found in colder climates.
Wall-Mounted Gas Heaters
Ideal for single rooms or smaller spaces, these heaters are fixed to walls and are commonly vented outside.
Portable Gas Heaters
Perfect for spaces without central heating, these can be moved from room to room.
Outdoor Gas Heaters
Used for patios or outdoor seating areas, outdoor heaters provide comfort during cooler months.

Modern electric heaters are typically 100% efficient which means that every kWh used is turned into heat, where a gas heater generally falls between 55 – 97% efficient. The energy efficiency of a gas burning furnace really depends on how much of the fuel is turned into heat. While this seems like a clear-cut win for electric models, gas heaters do have an edge in the speed in which it can warm a home. Since gas heaters are central, they can warm a large space much quicker which can result in lower overall usage.
Always make sure that a patio heater is stable or fixed, and only use them outdoors.
Never use or store a gas cylinder indoors.
Never use an industrial-type heater in a domestic situation.
Never use a cabinet heater. A cabinet heater is an indoor gas heater that is fuelled by an LPG gas bottle, which is housed inside the heater itself.

How Gas Heaters Work
Gas heaters and furnaces operate by lighting several burners located in the combustion chamber. Once the igniter sparks, the heat generated travels into the heat exchanger. The blowers are engaged and send air out through ducts that go into different rooms.
Clean the air filters
A dirty air filter can typically obstruct the continuous flow of air. If that happens to be the case, remember to always clean or replace your HVAC filters. Moreover, your home's vents should be open and unobstructed.
Check the heater's switch
In order for your gas heater to be up and running, you should turn your gas heater's switch 'ON' for it to work. Therefore, make sure to double-check that it is actually switched on.
Program your thermostat
Ensure your thermostat is turned on. If your thermostat is switched to "Auto" or "Heat," make sure that the temperature is set to the peak level. However, this could take a few moments to achieve.
Examine your pilot light
A faulty or dirty pilot light will often prevent your gas furnace from switching on. It is generally recommended to consult with an expert in this scenario unless you believe you can repair the pilot light yourself. Begin by switching off the electricity and natural gas to your furnace.
Ensure proper gas supply
Make sure that your gas heater or appliance is correctly linked to a gas source and that it receives adequate gas. Next, check to ensure that the gas regulator valve is in the "ON" position in order to accomplish this.
Temperature Control System: Governed by the furnace control board, this system activates the ignition switch, instigating the heating process in response to the thermostat’s heat demand.
Draft Induced Fan: Integral to the combustion process, this fan draws air into the burner assembly, facilitating the burners in heating the heat exchanger before expelling by-products safely outside.
Gas Burners: Triggered by the thermostat, gas burners release and ignite fuel for combustion, initiating the heat generation process.
Ignition Switch: Gas flows over the igniter to establish a flame, subsequently drawn through the burners to facilitate combustion and heat the heat exchanger.
Heat Exchanger Functionality
A critical component of gas furnaces, the heat exchanger efficiently transfers thermal energy to the passing air, enhancing overall energy efficiency.
Blower Fan System
Operating in conjunction with the return venting, the blower fan propels air over the hot heat exchanger, ensuring effective circulation throughout the home via the ductwork system.
Flue System
Serving as an exhaust mechanism, the flue or chimney expels gaseous by-products of combustion, contributing to the overall safety and efficiency of the system.
What Size Gas Heater Do I Need
The size gas heater you need for a small room (29m³ – 42m³) has a heat output of 2.9 – 4.2kW.
1
>>
A medium room (42m³ – 66m³) needs a gas heater size with 4.3 – 6.6kW.
2
>>
Large rooms (66m³ – 82m³) need a gas heater size with a heat output of 6.7 to 8.2kW.
3
>>
Do not go by MJ ratings, as heat output can vary greatly based on gas heater efficiency.
